Old Master Studies

These are all pencil renderings taken from paintings of master painters, among them DaVinci, Botticelli, Velasquez and Vermeer.

Such good practice to learn from the all time greats!

Tradition!

This last weekend I taught a two day art course focusing on reproducing Old Masters' works, and teaching fundamentals of artists' anatomy to an eclectic group of very talented pupils. Here is a selection of my demonstration pieces; the reproduction is a graphite drawing from a detail of a well known painting by Velasquez, "Infanta Margarita hacia los tres anos".

Regal Lady

Today I taught another "Old Masters" course in Tokyo. A small group, but a really dedicated bunch. One guy was an assistant to a top Japanese manga artist, so I was a little leery (feeling like I should just hand teaching duties over to him!) but all went well, and everyone was very satisfied with the progress they made. This is the one I did as the demonstration, after a painting by Velasquez. I'm quite pleased with it.
